Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Tax Invoice Requirements
In Australia, if you are registered for GST and make a taxable sale of more than A$82.50 (including GST), your business customer has the legal right to request a valid Tax Invoice so they can claim GST credits on their Business Activity Statement (BAS).
1. Rules for Sales Under A$1,000
For sales between A$82.50 and A$1,000, your tax invoice must show:
- That the document is intended to be a "Tax Invoice".
- The seller's identity (business name or trading name).
- The seller's Australian Business Number (ABN).
- The invoice issue date.
- A brief description of the goods or services supplied.
- The GST amount payable (either shown separately or stating "Total price includes 10% GST").
2. Rules for Sales of A$1,000 or More
For larger commercial sales of A$1,000 or greater, the ATO also requires you to include the buyer's identity or the buyer's ABN.
3. Tradie & Contractor Invoicing in Australia
Australian tradies (electricians, builders, plumbers, carpenters) commonly bill with progress payment milestones. Make sure to specify the job site location, your trade license number, and clear payment terms (typically Net 7 or Net 14 days).
• E-Commerce Shopify Integration & Checkout Setup (A$1,850.00)
• Monthly Retainer — Digital Marketing Optimization (A$950.00)
• Subtotal (excl. GST): A$6,000.00
• GST (10.0%): A$600.00
• Total Payable (inc. GST): A$6,600.00
Frequently Asked Questions for Australian Businesses
What if I don't provide an ABN on my invoice?
If you do not quote an ABN, Australian law requires the payer to withhold top-rate tax (47%) from your payment and remit it directly to the ATO under the No-ABN Withholding rule. Always quote your valid 11-digit ABN on every invoice!
How do Australian customers pay via BSB?
Simply enter your 6-digit BSB (e.g. 062-000 for Commonwealth Bank) and 8–9 digit account number in the payment terms field. Most Australian bank apps transfer funds within seconds using the New Payments Platform (NPP / Osko).
